Since 2010 we are doing research in our company on the recycling possibilities of cellular concrete rubble. In 2011 Chap-Yt bvba received a license to handle 50.000 tons of cellular concrete per year and we started to collect cellular concrete debris from demolitions and from sorting installations.
Chap-Yt accepts only pure cellular concrete that has got rid of plastic, wood, roofing, asbestos containing materials and other residual waste. Except the plaster that sticks to the cellular concrete blocks no other plaster is allowed amongst the debris. Blocks of plaster as Promonta and plasterboards as Gyproc absolutely have to be avoided. Consequently, mixed loads are always refused. Plaster and cellular concrete have a completely different composition and they react opposite to water and cement, for example.
The 2 key issues of cellular concrete are the porosity and the increased leaching of sulfates. For both problems has been found an internal solution, which resulted in various applications.
Chapyt Sand 0/4 mm: The recycled sand is partially being used as a sand substitute for the authentic Rhine sand 0/3 Special, as a substitute for Scheldt sand and Rhine sand in stabilized sand applications.
Iso Chapyt 4/12: The granules obtained after sieving the sand are being used as a substitute for expanded clay grains in dry applications such as backfilling in renovations and insulating levelling layers under concrete slabs and under roofing.
